Acupuncture provides a drug-free treatment and has very few side effects.

It assists in the prevention against disease as well as maintenance of wellbeing.

Acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of fine, sterile needles into specific points along the channels (meridians) on the body, called acu-points. These points are chosen according to the individual’s symptoms and underlying constitution.

Stimulating these acu-points clears energy blockages and encourages the normal free-flow of Qi and blood within the body. Acu-points may also be stimulated by other methods including moxibustion, cupping, massage and electro-stimulation.

Research has shown that when acupuncture needles are inserted into traditional acupuncture points specific nerve fibers are stimulated, causing a nerve impulse being sent to the spinal cord. This results in endorphins (brain chemicals) being released which provides a local inhibition of the incoming pain signal. Neurotransmitters - serotonin and norepinephrine are also released with acupuncture which aids in pain reduction and creating an antidepressant-like reaction.

Hormones are also affected by acupuncture with the stimulation of the pituitary gland and adrenal gland. Cortisol, a naturally occurring steroid with anti-inflammatory properties, is released into the bloodstream. Therefore, research now shows substantial evidence for providing natural pain relief and increasing well being.

In July 2012 acupuncture will become a regulated practice within the health care industry.
